Ideally, I'd like to replicate AO3's code for working out what the word count is but if I'm unable to do that for some reason, I think a disclaimer next to the word count (like a little ? you can hover or something) that says it might be a little off would be good.

Technically implemented as part of c1fc733939 but it's not using AO3's logic and, as a result, is not accurate.

It's marked as "Experimental" in the settings and is disabled by default but I still might pull it before the next update so I'm leaving this open for now.
